A planning application for a 6.87 Million Tonne extension to Ghyll Scaur Quarry,Millom was submitted to Cumbria County Council in June 2014.
Ghyll Scaur Quarry is a nationally important supplier of very high specification roadstone materials primarily used for high grip road surfacing on motorways and A roads.
The importance of Ghyll Scaur Quarry is acknowledged in Cumbria County Council’s adopted Core Strategy which identifies an Area of Search for the extension of Ghyll Scaur Quarry.
No change is proposed to the operating hours or vehicle movement limits .Annual highway contributions,the maintenance of the Millom Rock Park and the footpath network are likely to be assured by an updated Section 106 Agreement.
The proposed extension will help secure the jobs of 19 on site employees and a further 19 jobs attributable to transport and other ancillary employment.The site makes a significant contribution to the economy through wages,payment for support services,rates,and taxation.
