In June 2014 I completed my studies in Applied and Environmental Geology at the University of Leicester. The department has a close relationship with Aggregate Industries, and I had already received two bursaries and completed a summer work placement with the business in 2013.
I had no hesitation in applying to work for Aggregate Industries as I already felt it was the right company for me after my summer placement. The people, and role variety is what explicitly appealed to me, as well as the company being a global player.
My first graduate role with the company was based in Plymouth, where I was given an excellent opportunity to get an overall experience of the aggregates industry. I had the opportunity to experience life within every area of the quarry and was given a good grounding in what we actually do! I then went on to help implement the new Integrated Management System into the quarry, through which I learnt a lot about the health and safety, environmental and quality control aspects of the business. This placement allowed me to sample operational management, visit a large majority of the quarries in the South West and allowed me to really gain experience of the industry. I found the placement flexible and there is a real possibility to tailor it towards the path you would like to take, while getting to see how the whole business operates. I feel this was very important for whatever role I decided to pursue.
6 months after joining the business I found myself being offered a position within the Geology Department, which I was thrilled with, as it now meant I could put my degree into practice. I joined the department in March 2015 as a Geologist, I find the role extremely enjoyable and challenging. The role is hugely diverse from land searching, exploration, quarry designing, looking at geotechnical aspects, reserve and resource calculations, the list is endless. Being an Aggregate Geologist was an ambition of mine as they are involved in many aspects and not pigeon holed into certain tasks.
During my time with Aggregate Industries I have already managed to complete a number of training courses including a diploma in Quarry Management from Derby University, run through classroom learning to support your day to day tasks. The course was very intense but hugely beneficial if this industry suits you. At some point in the future Aggregate Industries will help support my Masters Studies in Geotechnical Engineering. The company’s approach to development and study is fantastic, and they have allowed me to complete many courses to help build my skill set.
I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know Aggregate Industries, since the first bursary I received from them in 2012. The people are great, the diversity of the role will always keep me interested and the opportunities to develop are fantastic. If the construction or quarrying industry appeals to you, I couldn’t recommend Aggregate Industries highly enough!
