Brief

In 2005 The Big Lottery Fund granted £43 million to kick start The Helix Project, a land transformation initiative designed to improve infrastructure between and around 16 communities in the Falkirk district of Scotland, including the eastern end of the Forth and Clyde Canal.

The mammoth eight year project would regenerate the area where a number of canals meet the River Carron, making the eastern end of the canal network more accessible to the general public. Plans included an 870m canal extension, a new tunnel beneath the M9 motorway as well as the re-routing of two high-pressure oil pipelines.

With these large scale changes in place, the project would then transform under-used land into a thriving 860 hectares of urban greenspace called ‘Helix Park’. Providing a central meeting point for many communities, Helix Park would boast a substantial events space and facilities for water sports surrounded by play areas and high quality path and cycle ways. Standing at the centre of Helix Park, as a monument to Scotland’s horse-powered heritage, would be The Kelpies, an equine statue standing 100 feet tall.

As a multi-faceted development, there were numerous teams working in tandem to deliver each phase on time and on budget. In order to keep the transformation moving forwards, the project specifiers were under pressure to seek out high quality, fit for purpose materials from suppliers capable of keeping to tight deadlines.

Solution

During the civil engineering phase of the development, the M9 was reduced to two lanes, allowing site access to the new tunnel which would run beneath the carriageway. As a main transport vein for the area, it was imperative to reopen the motorway as quickly as possible, once site works were complete.

To get the job done the principal contractor called on the just-in-time delivery solutions of Aggregate Industries, which was on hand to deliver 5,015 tonnes of coated materials to resurface the motorway and get the traffic moving once more.

Later on in the development, all eyes turned towards the much talked about creation of the Kelpies monument. The two horse heads are constructed from structural steel with a stainless steel cladding and weigh over 300 tonnes each.

In order to secure such unusual structures safely into the ground, the team required 5562 cubic meters of concrete and more than 200 tonnes of Asphalt supplied by Aggregate Industries’ Concrete division. Alongside this, the Aggregates team also provided 4143 tonnes of high quality materials and over 100 tonnes of Levenseat specialist sand.

Being able to offer so many of the required products for the job was of great benefit to the contractor and a clear demonstration of Aggregate Industries complete product solution.

Furthermore, delivering quantities of this nature to site all at once is a testament to Aggregate Industries’ large scale manufacturing of high quality materials as well as their bespoke haulage solutions, which in this instance aided in the erection of one of Scotland’s most recognised tourist attractions.
