Brief

To celebrate Her Majesty The Queen's Diamond Jubilee, a flotilla pageant was planned in her honour. The formal river procession would start at Battersea Bridge and finished downriver at Tower Bridge.

Promising to be one of the largest flotillas of its kind, a sailing vessel, strong enough to take large weight, was required to carry the Royal Jubilee Bells along the river procession.

Solution

On Sunday 3 June, over one thousand boats took to the River Thames to take part in the Diamond Jubilee Pageant in honour of Her Majesty The Queen.

Bennett's Barges was at the forefront of the celebrations with two of our tug and barge vessels undergoing extensive redesign and stabilisation work so that they could transport a floating belfry. The Royal Jubilee Bells, each weighing seven tonnes, were transported along the Thames ahead of the rowed and paddles boats by the Ursula Katherine and Steven B.  Both were painted and decorated fit for the historic occasion.

The floating belfry chimes were answered by those from the riverbank churches and many other churches right across The Commonwealth.

Also supplying materials to the London Olympic Games, Bennett’s Barges have once again highlighted how important The River Thames and our waterway network are to the country’s culture and infrastructure alike.
