Brief

Manchester City Council’s overall strategy to transform a 16-acre site in Beswick into a community hub included construction of a new Sixth Form College, a sports and leisure centre, retail units and improvements to local highways. The Council therefore needed to ensure the new car park and redeveloped hard landscaped areas on the site offered durability and capable of withstanding the full force of the British weather and would ensure effective surface water drainage for the safety of pedestrians and motorists on the new development.

The Council also required a solution that met its sustainable development policy, whilst proving cost effective for the overall Beswick regeneration master plan, and ensuring it was logistically capable of meeting the timescales for the project.

Solution

With our expertise in asphalt systems and solutions, our initial evaluation of the project criteria, alongside the project’s main contractors, Laing O’Rourke/Expanded Ltd and consultants AECOM, meant we could identify that our asphalt Sustainable Drainage System (SUDS) would not only meet the project criteria but would also offer cost savings over conventional drainage and asphalt surfacing methods.

We proposed products from our Drainasphalt range, together with our SuDS agg permeable sub-base. One of the benefits of using Drainasphalt is that it can be combined with other sustainable drainage products to offer a complete drainage solution. It was also the ideal product for this project as it is available in various sizes to suit a range of applications.

The high permeability rate of Drainasphalt allows water to pass quickly and freely through to the underlying structure, thus ensuring an effective surface drainage system for the hard landscaped areas across the 16-acre site.

The porous nature of Drainasphalt reduces, keeping surface water to a minimum on the new car park, and ensuring safer pedestrian and vehicle access.

With the asphalt specified at a depth of 80mm for 495 tonnes of the Drainasphalt used on the site, and a further 235 tonnes specified at 40mm, effective communication by Aggregate Industries with the main contractor ensured this significant order could be supplied on time, over a three day period.

Supplying directly from our own quarry, we were able to maximise efficiency and ensure that there was minimal disruption to the delivery schedule, so construction could be carried out in the required timescale.
