Working with a multitude of teams, Charcon demonstrated its leading envrionmental credentials and good customer service
Dartington Primary School and Nursery, commissioned by Devon County Council, needed to accommodate 420 children. The client requested a thoroughly green building plus extensive landscaping which was to be used as learning tools.
The project budget was £6.1 million including £735K on hard and soft landscaping plus groundworks.
The landscaping includes graphics explaining the origins, use and sustainability of the materials used. It includes play areas, a nature trail and a wetland habitat area. A beach area was also included which, as well as offering a superb play opportunity, also doubles as a SUDS attenuation system.
Charcon worked closely with all parties on the project which is now complete and well received by everyone. The majority of the hard landscaping is around the main building where pedestrian movements and access is at its highest. The scheme includes separate pedestrian, cycle and vehicular access routes.
The architect, White Design Associates, said,
“We often get positive feedback from our clients and end users. Normally this comes in the form of a letter or a phone call but not on this occasion. The caretaker at Dartington Primary School sent us a photograph of a robin nesting on the site with chicks. We are delighted that this lovely piece of news demonstrates the success of creating spaces that both people and animals can inhabit and enjoy to maximum benefit”
