Tight deadlines combined with health and safety objectives made Charcon Durakerb the ideal selection for the Edgbaston Cricket Ground car park renovation

Key facts

Sub contractor: Spadeoak
Sector: Sports and Leisure
Client: Warwickshire County Cricket Club
Contractor: Spadeoak
  • Durakerb half battered
  • Health and safety focus
  • Speed of installation key

The land that now makes up Edgbaston Stadium was originally owned by the Calthorpe Estate, who had developed the manor of Edgbaston into an exclusive suburb over the course of the 19th century. They thought a cricket ground to be an asset that would add to the genteel image of the area.

Edgbaston Cricket Ground, now home to Warwickshire County Cricket Club remains a pinnacle stage for British cricket. It is now considered, alongside Lords, as one of the greatest cricket venues in the United Kingdom.

When Spadeoak were awarded the contract to resurface the auxillary car park, it demanded strict planning and a steadfast works schedule. All work had to be completed within two weeks to allow for the next live broadcast coverage.

Aggregate Industries Charcon Durakerb has been engineered to aid manual handling and enable fast, easy and safe installation. Each unit is designed and manufactured to utilise space via a sequence of unique hollowed out centres. These open segments are divided by robust rib structures for strength and stability. Due to this revolutionary engineering, Durakerb units weigh less than 6kg each.

Spadeoak took full advantage of this feature when working on the car park at Edgbaston. They were able to achieve a reduction in labour costs and deliver the project in a timely and effective manner.

Our study found that it took a gang of two under three hours to install 110 linear metres of Durakerb, without the use of any kerb lifting equipment. Therefore, the Durakerb installation rate was an impressive 90 seconds per linear metre.

With Health, Safety and Environmental objectives in mind, Spadeoak incorporated Durakerb into the design not only to increase efficiency, but also to protect their workforce.

By removing risk at source, operatives were not exposed to heavy lifting, crush threats, hand-arm vibration syndrome or silica dust.

Customer testimonials

This project had to be finished within a short time scale & by using Durakerb we were able to complete the job during our two week window. They were effortless to lift & thanks to the alignment spigot, we could achieve a perfectly straight run quickly.
Andrew Bingham
We found Durakerb easy to cut with a normal hand saw, which meant that risks from HAVS, noise and silica dust were removed completely.
