London Concrete supplied 8,000 metres of high strength piling concrete

Key facts

Sector: BREEAM Excellent construction
Client: BSkyB
Contractor: MACE
  • 8,000 metres of high strength piling concrete
  • 25,000m of stent concrete mix

Brief

Sky is in the process of constructing a new BREEAM Excellent rated head-quarters in West London.

The main building of the new Campus development is approximately 160 metres long and 100 metres wide and is aiming to set an international new benchmark for sustainable architecture in a broadcasting environment.

Throughout the specification process, international construction and consultancy company, Mace, was tasked with sourcing manufacturers who could not only meet the supply demand and logistical challenges of this highly demanding project, but could also prove its own sustainability credentials were in line with Sky’s vision for a genuinely sustainable development.

Solution

London Concrete was one manufacturer which shared Sky’s passion for environmentally conscious construction practices. With the product portfolio and logistical resources in place to meet the piling needs of the build, the team was selected from a competitive tender process to work on the Sky development alongside other like-minded manufacturers and suppliers.

London Concrete supplied 8,000 metres of high strength piling concrete over a period of just eight weeks, for the foundations. This was no mean feat, with a number of large pours taking place on what was a very busy London building site.

Following the successful delivery of the foundation piling, it was brought to the contractor’s attention that London Concrete processes and supplies stent, a secondary Cornish granite which comes from the waste tray of china clay production. Essentially a waste product, stent is transported by rail freight from Cornwall and is used by London Concrete to improve the environmental credentials of large concrete pours.

Mace felt that this would provide a sustainable solution to the concrete pours required for the structural aspects of the development’s construction and recommended it to the project engineers.

London Concrete supplied 25,000m of stent concrete mix over a period of six months, calling on the logistical resources and management techniques which had made the piling supply such a success.

London Concrete’s positive engagement with the Sky development is a real testament to London Concrete’s diverse product portfolio, logistical capabilities and commitment to sustainable design and construction and the team is proud to have played an important role in the development of this world-class BREEAM scheme.
