Storm damage to rail infrastructure required a multi-product solution being coordinated from multiple sites within challenging timescales to keep the trains running.

Key facts

Sector: Rail
Client: Network Rail
Contractor: N/A
  • 4500 tonnes of 150-100 Gabion stone delivered within tight time frame
  • 600 tonnes of fill materials and 1000 tonnes of premium topsoil to finalise works
  • Long term stabilisation of rail embankment helps keep lines open

When part of the rail embankment in Milton Keynes began to subside in bad weather, it was decided that emergency rail embankment improvement works would be required in order to safeguard the line and its passengers.

One of the UK’s most well-known civil engineering contractors was in charge of delivering the project, within a strict timeframe and on a tight budget.  These cost and time constraints became the key drivers throughout the competitive tendering process, during which specifiers searched for a manufacturer capable of providing a durable and long lasting solution to the embankment erosion.

Understanding the importance of delivering high-quality and cost effective product solutions to the rail sector, Aggregate Industries was identified as the manufacturer of choice for the rail embankment improvement works in Milton Keynes.

The solution was 4,500 tonnes of 100-150mm Gabion Stone, which would protect both the embankment and the railway line. In addition to supplying the stone, Aggregate Industries was able to offer a multi-product solution by providing 600 tonnes of fill material and 1,000 tonnes of topsoil, from two additional processing sites.

Bringing together three different materials from one manufacturer assisted with onsite efficiencies as well as the all-important cost savings.

The materials were delivered over a very short time frame, in quantities dictated by the contractor onsite in accordance to the progression of the job. Implementing a just-in-time delivery solution, the materials were transported in loads ranging from 300-500 tonnes per day, straight to site.

With dedicated logistics teams situated around the UK, Aggregate Industries is best placed to offer multi-product solutions to large scale projects where cost and time constraints are of great importance.
