Brief

Leading manufacturer and supplier of construction and building materials, Aggregate Industries, has implemented a rail distribution facility at one of its High PSV processing plants.

The Haughmond Hill plant in Shrewsbury, has processed High PSV for many years, using a fleet of heavy duty distribution lorries to transport the material throughout the local area.

Demand for this material has been increasing due to improved government and private commercial spending on civil engineering projects, and industry bodies agree that further growth is expected going forwards.

With High PSV being a notoriously scarce resource in the UK, much of our consumption is imported. Importing products of this nature can not only prove more expensive, but can also pose logistical challenges too.

Solution

Understanding that there is now an increasing need for this product, Aggregate Industries took on the challenge of creating a distribution solution that would mean larger quantities of PSV could be delivered further afield from their production plant in Haughmond Hill.

Simon Blake, General Manager for Midlands Rail, at Aggregate Industries, explains:

“High PSV is used in the surface course of roads because of its high skid resistance. With more civil engineering projects taking off throughout the UK, the demand for this material continues to increase.

“Importation will continue to play a part in addressing this need, whilst exploring alternative, cost and energy efficient options for distributing the PSV produced in this country has delivered a more resilient and flexible UK supply chain.”

The company’s team of rail freight specialists identified a local rail yard, capable of facilitating freight trains. The station at Coton Hill in Shrewsbury was a short drive from the processing plant, and would open up a number of distribution opportunities to take the sought after material further afield.

Negotiations took place to secure a licence for the operation with Network Rail and regular rail services of PSV products commenced from Coton Hill in September 2014.

Simon concludes: “Being able to distribute our material in a timely and cost effective manner, has been instrumental to meeting customer demand as the construction industry continues to move from strength to strength. Implementing rail distribution at Haughmond Hill is just one example of how Aggregate Industries continually strives to create real solutions to the problems faced by the companies who use our products.”
