Key facts

Sector: Sports and Leisure
Client: Global Energy Stadium, Ross County Football Club
Contractor: Souters Sports
  • Supply of lower Rootzone sand and upper Rootzone layers for football pitch replacement.  Part of £1.7m upgrade
  • Logistical challenge to provide large quantities of sand in a short period of time
  • Deliver high quality drainage solution capable of withstanding increased rainfall - 2300 tonnes of LV20PAV sand and 1000 tonnes Levenseat Sports Rootzone

Brief

The Global Energy Stadium, home of Scottish Premier League football club Ross County, was set to undergo an extensive close-season upgrade in line with the latest SPL standards. The £1.7m investment was to include improvements to car parking areas as well as additional seating for more than 6,000 fans, but taking centre stage was a brand new pitch complete with undersoil heating.

The new pitch needed to deliver superior drainage, capable of withstanding the heavy rainfall which is so common in Scotland. Furthermore, the ground needed to be fit for purpose in time for the new season, leaving only a small completion window for the preparatory works and pitch laying.

Solution

We worked closely with the main contractor, Souters Sports, to develop a product and logistical solution to meet the exacting standards of the refurbishment as well as the tight time constraints of the annual football calendar.

Over 2,300 tonnes of Levenseat LV20PAV high quality graded medium fine silica sand was recommended, along with more than 1,000 tonnes of Levenseat Sports Rootzone in order to produce the perfect playing surface.

Thanks to stringent consistencies in the production process, Aggregate Industries’ Rootzone is renowned for delivering the ideal saturated hydraulic conductivity for sports pitches, whilst maintaining enough moisture to promote positive root growth. This was verified by an independent European testing body, to ensure it met the standards set out by the project consultant.

With so much redevelopment work happening on site during the short time the ground was out of use, Aggregate Industries had just 21 days to produce and deliver around 3,500 tonnes of material 180 miles north of the quarry site. The management team and dedicated production staff at Aggregate Industries Levenseat Quarry rose to the challenge, formulating a bespoke delivery strategy which wouldn’t hinder onsite works or delay the project.

“The project at RCFC was particularly challenging due to construction timescales, logistical delivery and delivery timescales. Despite this project being one of the first major orders, Aggregate Industries took meticulous care in the production and quality control of all products delivers during this construction. All delivery schedules were met and the project was delivered ahead of schedule and to date provides a first class quality playing surface. I would have no hesitation in recommending Aggregate Industries as a supplier and look forward to working with the team in the years to come.”
