Aggregate Industries achieves global first with responsible sourcing certification

23 March 2009

Aggregate Industries, the UK based construction and building materials company, has become the first company in the world to achieve a BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Certificate from BRE Global, confirming its market leading position at the forefront of sustainable construction.

The new BES 6001 framework standard is an independent certification scheme which assesses responsible sourcing policies and practices throughout the supply chain of construction products. The universal rating system will enable architects, specifiers and construction professionals to meet sustainability targets more easily.

We are the first company to be approved to BES 6001 by achieving a ‘Very Good’ rating on four of our product groups at our Newbold Quarry site - ready mixed concrete, concrete block paving, aggregates and bagged aggregates.

Bill Bolsover,  our Group Chief Executive Officer said, “Our work over the last ten years has culminated in us being the first company to have product groups certificated to this standard by BRE Global. This recognition focuses our various achievements through our products and enables our customers to source with even greater confidence. Responsible sourcing brings together our efforts and recognises the dedication of our people at Aggregate Industries in what we do.”

Carol Atkinson, Chief Executive of BRE Global, said, “I am delighted that Aggregate Industries is taking a lead in understanding and improving Responsible Sourcing in their business. BRE Global has worked with leading stakeholders to develop this standard to provide a level playing field for the sustainability of construction products. It takes into account specific environmental, economic and social impacts and provides recognition for suppliers embracing genuine sustainability.”

Carol Atkinson, Chief Executive of BRE Global, presented Bill Bolsover our Group Chief Executive, with its BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Certificate at Ecobuild on 4th March 2009.

One of the first tasks for the winner will be to work with Chris and current scholar Lindsay Anglin on ‘Dawn Chorus’ at the Chelsea Flower Show. This beautiful garden is being created to demonstrate what can be achieved at a fifth of the cost of a usual show garden budget.
