Aggregate Industries gets stamp of approval from Carbon Trust

September 2009

We have led the way to become the first company in its sector to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard across all of its UK operations. The company has reduced its absolute carbon footprint by 11%*, representing over 15,000 tonnes of carbon emissions. It now aims to reduce its carbon intensity by 20% by 2012.

As part of our work towards the standard, an Energy Performance Certificate system was developed for all of its asphalt plants**. Grading every plant from A-G, the system ensures all units are moving towards an A grade with individual improvement plans in place. An industry first, the scheme is being considered by the Mineral Products Association with a view to creating new standards across all asphalt plants in the UK.

The ongoing use of bio-fuels, investment in both technology and infrastructure and an increasing awareness of carbon emissions across the business have also been major contributors to this substantial carbon footprint reduction.

Bill Bolsover, our Chief Executive Officer said:
“As the first construction materials company to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard across the business, the company continues its role as industry leader. This follows hot on the heels of our recent accolade as the first to achieve company wide BES 6001 responsible sourcing certification. Sustainable practice is vital to our performance and growth and reducing carbon delivers tangible benefits.”

Harry Morrison, General Manager of the Carbon Trust Standard, commented:
“Being certified with the Carbon Trust Standard is proof an organisation has taken genuine action to reduce their direct impact on climate change by cutting carbon emissions. We congratulate Aggregate Industries on this achievement.

"Both businesses and consumers share a desire for one, credible way to prove an organisation has not only measured, but actually reduced their carbon emissions year-on-year without the use of offsetting. The Carbon Trust Standard provides this credibility and we encourage more organisations to follow us in making this commitment."

The Carbon Trust Standard is the world’s first carbon award that requires an organisation to measure, manage and reduce its carbon footprint and actually make real reductions year-on-year. Unlike other award schemes, organisations are rewarded for actions they’ve taken to cut carbon across their own operations.
