Aggregate Industries helps local BMX club enter fast lane

September 2015.

Leicester-based supplier of construction materials, Aggregate Industries, has provided a range of surface solutions for a new eight lane national standard BMX track, opening in Leicester this weekend.

The eight lane track is a part of the recent development taking place at the Leicester Huncote Hornets BMX Club, following a £50,000 grant from the Sport England Inspired Facilities fund.

Recognising the importance of the sports facility to the local community, Aggregate Industries donated over £30,000 worth of materials and labour to the project which included; 1,195 tonnes of aggregates, 135 tonnes of asphalt and 10cm³ of concrete.

The new lanes will complement an existing 4-man track, helping to bring the club’s facilities up to an international standard ahead of it its first major hosting gig on the 20th September, for the Regional BMX Championships.

Club Chairman, Jan Freakley, said: “We are delighted to have secured this investment and together with the support from local sponsors means we have been able to build a fantastic facility, suitable to hold regional and national competitions.

“BMX is now an Olympic sport and young people will get the opportunity to train with a view of winning competitions, or to meet new friends and take part in some healthy exercise. You never know, we could have the next male or female BMX World or Olympic Champion on our doorstep.”

The Leicester Huncote Hornets BMX Club is the only BMX race club in Leicestershire and has been well-known for nurturing young talent, many of whom now take part in national and international competitions.

Brian Wiltshire, Quarry Operations Manager from Aggregate Industries, said: “Having worked on and supplied material for some of the leading racing tracks in the world, it was a pleasure to bring this expertise to a great cause so close to home.

“We feel proud to have been a part of a project that has created a top class facility that Leicestershire can boast of and look forward to the talent that will come out of the club.”

The official opening of the Leicester Huncote Hornets BMX Club takes places on Saturday 12th September 2015, at 12pm.
