Aggregate Industries sustains performance in challenging market

11th March 2009

Aggregate Industries, the Leicestershire based construction and building materials company, has helped parent The Holcim Group perform in line with the market in the UK during the current economic downturn.

Europe once again made the largest contribution to the group financial results released today (4th March 2009). Group companies in central and eastern Europe made particular progress compared with the previous financial year and selected product areas performed strongly, with sales of ready-mix concrete increasing by 6.1 per cent to 21 million cubic metres.

Holcim has held up well in 2008 with a full year operating EBITDA of CHF 5.3 billion despite the challenging economic climate. Improvements in efficiency, price adjustments and positive trends in selected growth markets all helped to offset the difficult market conditions. The group remains confident based on a worldwide market presence, a portfolio of proven and innovative products and a low-impact and cost-conscious management of resources and energy.

Our Group Chief Executive, Bill Bolsover, believes sustainability remains key to the company’s future. He commented:

“Even amid the current economic turmoil, we stand firmly by our principles of environmental and social responsibility. We have been proactively leading the sector for many years and we believe sustainability is vital to our performance and growth. With sustainability rising up the public agenda, new frameworks, such as the Code for Sustainable Buildings, is turning the tide firmly towards sustainable construction. The company is perfectly placed to drive real improvements across the industry that will benefit both our company and the wider community.”

We became the first company in the world to be awarded a BES 6001 Responsible Sourcing Certificate today (4th March 2009) from BRE Global. The certification follows an independent third party assessment of the company’s responsible sourcing policies and practices throughout the supply chain of construction products.

In the 2008 Dow Jones Sustainability Index, Holcim was designated “Leader of the Industry” for the fourth year in succession and received, for the second time, the “Sector Leader” and “SAM Gold Class” accolades of the Sustainable Asset Management Group (SAM) in cooperation with PricewaterhouseCoopers.
