Yeoman Bank moors at Riga for first time

The 205-metre long Yeoman Bank with 33,000 tons of crushed granite on board moored at the KS Termināls of the Freeport of Riga for the first time on 10th May 2012, heralding the launch of operations by Yeoman Latvia, Northern Europe’s leading heavy building materials and cement producer Aggregate Industries UK Ltd subsidiary in Latvia.

“The Yeoman Bank is a new challenge to the Riga port, because the size of the ship significantly exceeds the average amount of crushed granite cargo delivered to Riga. It attests to our ability to supply quality crushed granite in large quantities to Latvia to better meet our clients’ needs. The company has serious long-term plans in Latvia and the Baltic countries, and a viable company with steady cargo bases will be developed here in a few years,” emphasises Oliver Patsch, Aggregate Industries Director for Great Britain, Nordic and Baltic Countries.

Yeoman Bank is one of the five self-discharging vessels of Aggregate Industries. The ship is 205 metres long. Given the dimensions of the vessel, it cannot be unloaded in one go in Riga, which is why part of the cargo was unloaded at the KS Termināls at Krievu Island on the 10th May, and the other part cargo was unloaded on 11th May, at the Riga Central Terminal. Yeoman Bank can take up to 37,000 tons of cargo on board, which is significantly more than the average amount of crushed granite shipped to Riga: 5000 to 10,000 tons. The crushed granite cargo delivered to Riga is equal to crushed granite freights delivered in 1300 trucks.

“Over the past five years, Aggregate Industries Foreign Markets Department has already delivered crushed granite shipments to SIA M-2, a/s Latvijas Dzelceļš a/s A.C.B. and other road construction companies that use the material in building roads of European importance and in infrastructure development. By establishing the subsidiary in Latvia, we wish to improve customer service quality: we will be able to better react to our clients’ specific needs and at the same time we will move closer to our priority sales markets. We are planning to handle more than 200,000 tons of crushed granite through Riga within 12 months, becoming one of the largest suppliers in the Baltic countries,” says Yeoman Latvia Chairman of the Board Zigmārs Puikevics.

Yeoman Latvia is a company established in Latvia with the purpose of serving customers in the Baltic region and Russia. The company fully belongs to the British based Aggregate Industries, which in turn is part of one of the largest cement producers in the world, the Swiss company:-Holcim Group. The company’s capacity for crushed granite production is over 11.5 million tons annually; the company’s largest quarries are located in Scotland and Norway.

Aggregate Industries quarries, manufactures and supplies a wide range of materials to the construction industry. Through continued innovation and investment, it has been certified The Responsible Source™ and offers a diverse portfolio of sustainable solutions to complement its traditional product offering.
