Logistics

We have an extensive logistics service which ensures we can deliver our products throughout the UK and Northern Europe by road, rail and sea. Where possible, we aim to minimise the environmental impact associated with the transport of products. For instance, in 2018 alone, we transported 4.8 million tonnes of material by rail and 6.8 million tonnes by ship.

On time delivery of our products to our customers’ sites is critical for the continued success of our business. However, we recognise that the transporting of our products and services can have adverse social and environmental impacts including:

  • Use of fossil fuels
  • COemissions
  • Increased road vehicle movements
  • Nuisance to local residents.

Our transport emissions currently stand at 2.9 KgCO2e/ tonne the lowest level since we started reporting in 2008 when we emitted 4.21 KgCO2e/ tonne. This improvement is as a result of both better data collection and efficiencies in our logistics.

Aggregate Industries operates a dedicated fleet of gravity fed self unloaders in order to service it’s customers needs throughout Europe and the world. Yeoman Bridge and Yeoman Bontrup at

250m in length and capable of carrying 96,000mts of cargo are the two largest self-unloaders in the world. Utilising a system of conveyor belts running through tunnels beneath the cargo holds and a vertical lift belt feeding an 80 meter boom conveyor mounted on the deck, cargo can be discharged directly to shore, hopper or other vessels at rates of up to 6,000 mts per hour.  This capability means that typically a full cargo of up to 96,000mts is typically discharged within 24 hours.

In addition to operating large self-unloaders AI charters a range of conventional and excavator equipped vessels in order to meet customers needs, whether directly to remote and underdeveloped ports as part of infrastructure and offshore construction projects, or supplying coastal and inland customers through virtual quarries.
