In May 2009, Bardon Aggregates’ sites joined European counterparts in raising awareness of European Minerals Day which aimed to highlight the importance of minerals industries. This year particular focus was given to biodiversity. During a guided visit of rehabilitated areas, visitors may come across rare plant and animal species. Activities were aimed at raising awareness of this old, yet innovative and sustainable sector.
Delia Shannon, Community Engagement and Biodiversity Manager said:“From guided flower walks to quarry tours, many sites have been active in supporting European Minerals Day.
“At Bardon Aggregates we pride ourselves on our strong relationships with the communities around our sites and endeavour to teach people about the importance of mineral extraction and how we can enhance local biodiversity”.
Scheduled events included newt hunting at Hulands Quarry in Bowes in association with the Durham Wildlife Trust, nature tours at Moorcroft Quarry in Plymouth and a public open day at Ripon City Quarry, North Yorkshire. An event was also held at Powmyre Quarry and Murton Nature Reserve in Angus, Scotland where school children from Glamis Primary School visited the sites to learn about the transformation of a quarry to a nature reserve.
