The staff at Ripon City Quarry have been developing old workings to create fabulous new reedbeds. A requirement under the planning conditions will see reedbed and open water habitats created to increase the diversity of flora and fauna around the North Yorkshire site.
Chiefly, the habitat is designed to encourage all manner of nesting birds including Bittern as well as many other species. It will also improve the flood defences in the area, especially for the city of York.
The site, which has recently been granted planning permission for a further seven years extraction, will be turning even more land in the near future over to agriculture, recreational areas and another 14ha of reedbed.
Site Manager Andy Parker commented “It’s great for the lads on site to create an important area of natural beauty, encouraging new species to the area.
When the site eventually closes, we know that local people will have something special to enjoy for years to come”. The site will be handed over to the Yorkshire Wildlife Trust.
