More than 100 people attended a public lecture in March 2010 to learn about the volcanic history of Cumbria as part of the area’s celebrations to open the highly anticipated Millom Rock Park.
The Park comprises an excellent viewing vantage over our Ghyll Scaur Quarry and includes many large rock specimens from the quarry and other local sources in Cumbria, complete with descriptions. Additionally there are schematic descriptions of our quarrying process.
Funded from a number of sources, primarily Bardon Aggregates and the Aggregate Levy Sustainability Funds of Cumbria County Council and Natural England, the project was completed by a committee comprising other members of the local community. Most enthusiastic and involved were Jack Procter and Les Butcher, who are both members of the quarry liaison committee.
The official opening, organised by Tom Clifford, geologist, and David Kirk, quarry manager, saw one of the world’s leading volcano experts, Professor Peter Kokelaar speak about the role of geology in shaping the landscape and industrial heritage of the area. “I’m sure the Rock Park will be a great success and provide much enjoyment for people visiting West Cumbria.” - Professor Kokelaar, University of Liverpool
