CEEQUAL

The Civil Engineering Environmental Quality Assessment and Awards Scheme (CEEQUAL) was first developed through a consortium of industry partners and government bodies to try and raise the standard of environmental practices in civil engineering projects. The total construction value of projects assessed under CEEQUAL reached £6 billion in late 2008 and a number of high profile projects now ask for particular levels of attainment against CEEQUAL criteria.

The CEEQUAL manual covers twelve sections which include; land use, ecology and biodiversity, energy and carbon, materials and transport amongst others. There are a range of awards available to compliment the different stages of the construction project from a whole project award to design only awards.

There is a separate sub-section on the responsible sourcing of materials where evidence is required to support any claim that the responsible sourcing of materials has been considered or specified. The BRE BES 6001 standard is highlighted as a notable development for the responsible sourcing of construction materials in the UK.
