Construction materials

Quarrying is at the heart and soul of our business. Extracting aggregates from the ground is the starting point in the lifecycle of our products and services. Without stone, society as we know it would be a very different place. There would be no buildings, no filtered water and no infrastructure.

We use quarried stone to make asphalt, ready-mixed concrete and a wide variety of precast concrete products – everything from stairs and beams to kerbs and decorative patio slabs. All these products are used as materials in building the world around us.

One industry’s waste

Where possible, quarried stone is complemented with recycled and secondary alternatives to create more sustainable construction materials.

Waste from power stations can be used as a part replacement for cement in ready-mixed concrete. We use Pulverised Fuel Ash (PFA) and Ground Granulated Blast Furnace Slag (GGBS). The resulting product has lower embedded carbon, reduces the need for virgin cement and prevents the waste materials going to landfill.

In Devon we produce a unique construction material, which is a by-product of another company’s processes. The china clay industry removes and tips aggregates it has to remove to get to the clay deposits. Aggregate Industries processes this material to create a range of construction materials including single sized and graded aggregates and decorative stone.

By-products of other industries can also be used in concrete mixes, these include china clay waste and crushed green bottle glass, both of which may be used to replace virgin materials in mix designs
