As a major supplier of materials to the construction industry, we are conscious of both the impacts and benefits our products have on people, the environment and the economy.

Based at Bardon Hall in Markfield, Leicestershire, Aggregate Industries UK Limited is the business name for the scope of our 2010 sustainability report. This includes all wholly owned operations within the UK and those in northern Europe. Theses are Halsvik Aggregates in Norway, Ronez in the Channel Islands, Yeoman Baumineralien in Germany and Yeoman Poland.
We are a member of the Holcim Group, a private limited company by shares.
The report covers the calendar year from 1 January 2010 to 31 December 2010 and applies to all our wholly owned business operations unless stated. We neither include our joint ventures in this report nor acquisitions or divestment and closures completed in the reporting period.
Since our last report, published for the year 1 January - 31 December 2009, some concrete plants and quarries were closed or mothballed. Our 100% owned Charcon Flooring and Charcon Precast Solutions businesses were merged with the Caprio Group to create a new joint venture business during 2010.
How we report
We have produce an annual sustainability report since 2002. The 2010 report is written in two halves comprising this GRI index and a written report ‘The seven ages of Aggregate Industries’. This is the third report from Aggregate Industries to be written using the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Guidelines as our methodology.
The traditional means of reporting on an annual basis remains appropriate for our main indicators of performance. We made every attempt to continue with indicators from previous reports to allow trends to develop. We are part of a major global business and that is highly relevant in terms of our accountability and disclosures and our report needs to be read in conjunction with the Annual Report and Sustainable Development Report from Holcim Ltd, our parent company. These can be located at www.holcim.com/sustainability
To assist our progress in meeting the requirements of the GRI framework we have again been working with two independent organisations. SGS United Kingdom Limited was chosen as our external verification body to audit this report and ensure that it is accurate and covers relevant information, in accordance with GRI guidance. Their assurance statement can be located in our 2010 sustainability report 'Seven ages of Aggregate Industries'.
Independent facilitators TQ3 facilitated discussion to determine what is material to our stakeholders. This helped shape and influence our decisions on content, style and presentation of this report. Download their full report, along with more information regarding materiality.
