Our commitment and goals
As a business we utilise water in a number of ways; to wash aggregates, for on site dust suppression and use within our production process. We also move significant quantities of water during dewatering as an integral part of the mineral extraction process. Therefore we recognise our key responsibilities as a custodian of the water environment and endeavor to manage our operations effectively.
We have therefore engaged with key stakeholders, internally and externally, to ensure that we are well positioned to manage our activities in the future. The introduction of the EU Water Framework Directive is also expected to bring a significant change in the use and management of water in our operations.
Individual water management plans have to be completed for each of our sites. One of the potential consequences of climate change is the increasing number of heavy rainfall events; our sites cover large catchment areas and there is an increasing risk of sites breaking permitted discharge consent limits, particularly for suspended solids.
Our water plan seeks to explain our commitment further.

Heavy rainfall can also cause problems of flooding in urban areas. In recognising this Aggregate Industries' Sustainable Drainage Solution (SUDS) has evolved over the past five years. Our comprehensive design guide and a range of pollution prevention solutions can be incorporated into SUDS.
