SuperColour Ultra coloured asphalt from Aggregate Industries was the perfect choice for the resurfacing of Bedford’s Victorian Embankment Promenade.

The Project

Bedford’s Victorian Embankment is often described as the jewel in the market town’s crown, with a tree-lined promenade running alongside the River Great Ouse including ornate bridges and a historic bandstand. It combines riverside views and dazzling floral bedding displays to provide the perfect space to sit, relax and enjoy the great outdoors.
In 2022, Bedfordshire Borough Council announced a £1.5million investment and enhancement of the riverside area, starting with pavement renewal works which will drive the initial improvements. Historically the promenade area had a buff surface but over time that had eroded away. The Council sought to replace this buff surface and enlisted local contractor DJT Surfacing to undertake the works.

The Solution

DJT Surfacing specified SuperColour Ultra 6mm asphalt in buff colour from Aggregate Industries, the first time this product had been used by Bedfordshire Borough Council. In excess of 500 tonnes were used to resurface the embankment area.
Available in a variety of colours, the SuperColour range is suitable for a range of architectural and decorative applications, particularly where it is important to provide colour differentiation such as private drives, cycleways and pedestrian areas.
All surfacing works were completed on time ahead of Bedford’s annual River Festival Weekend, including stopping works for the historic Bedford Regatta.
Jo Salmon and Managing Director from DJT Surfacing said: “This was a very important project for the town and Aggregate Industries provided the exact solution we needed, working to tight project schedules. They also helped to ensure product supply around the Regatta, where we were required to stop works for the weekend. We would not hesitate to use SuperColour Ultra again for similar projects.”
