Aggregate Industries has supplied 15,000 tonnes of Series 600 limestone to contractor, Carillion Rail, for the completion of Crossrail’s 120m Heathrow Flyover.
With two freight rail terminals ‘bookending’ Carillion’s site at both Heathrow and Acton, Aggregate Industries was perfectly situated to provide an unrivalled logistical solution for this tightly scheduled project.
This unique, local transportation capability worked in the manufacturer’s favour during the competitive tender process alongside its ability to provide Series 600 limestone to a defined specification. The material comprised stones of a particular angle to give superior ‘locking’ abilities – perfect for the construction of ramps, used to lift the rail line into its flyover position.
The nature of this interlocking limestone also provides enough strength for the slopes to withstand the weight and vibration of the trains as they ascend the hill to the new flyover.
Jamie Greenwood, sales and logistics manager for Aggregate Industries, comments:
“Having two rail heads so conveniently located allowed us to transport the limestone directly into the site from our Torr quarry in Somerset.
“Building such a large structure, in such a densely populated area, meant the construction site was very small – too small to store large quantities of material. To overcome this issue whilst adhering to the tight schedule of works, we worked closely with Carillon Rail to arrange for their own freight train to be loaded with limestone in our Acton terminal during the night, to minimise disruption.”
The flyover forms part of Crossrail’s £14.8bn project to develop a new world class railway for London, which will allow passengers to travel across the city without disembarking.
Jamie concludes: “Crossrail is undoubtedly one of the most talked about developments in the UK at the moment and we are delighted to have played our part in the creation of what is set to be one of its most iconic structures – the Heathrow Flyover.
“Our limestone met the very specific requirements of the specification and our own rail links really set us apart from the competition, which is a real testament both Aggregate Industries’ product portfolio and logistical capabilities.”
