The new music block at Somerhill School demanded a high quality block with the added functionality of soundproofing.

The schools at Somerhill are unique in Kent and very unusual in England. They consist of three independent schools; Somerhill Pre-Prep, Yardley Court and Derwent Lodge.

All three schools are housed in a Grade I listed Jacobean mansion and, whilst each school has its own classrooms, some of the facilities are shared. These include the ICT, Music, Drama and Art rooms and all schools have access to the excellent and spacious sporting facilities and also, of course, the grounds, which are some 150 acres in extent.

The music block build began in January 2014 with the aim of providing a dedicated area for music teaching, practice and performance.  It will have a large performance area, a smaller classroom, 6 practice rooms and a music department office.

Aggregate Industries supplied the architect with Masterblock Masterlite Pro Acoustic medium dense blocks to add additional soundproofing to the new Somerhill School music block. The construction process added layers of insulation and soundproof metal sheeting to cavity walls that are larger than normal. Each room within the music block was constructed with material separating adjoining walls to ensure sound transfer is kept to a minimum. This results in the maximum level of decibel reduction for each room within the music block.

The product features of Masterblock's Masterlite Pro Acoustic include:

  • Meets the acoustic requirements of BB93
  • Low air permeability ensuring good sound reduction values, as well as thermal properties
  • Reaction to fire is A1 in compliance with BB100
  • Consistent close textured faced
