Once completed, Arena Tower will provide up to 40 floors of apartments in the heart of the city centre. Aggregate Industries was awarded the contract to supply concrete for the development by MPB, one of the UK’s leading concrete structure suppliers and contractors. The project required 8000m3 of ready-mixed concrete for ground works, concrete frameworks and decking slabs.
To meet the strict requirements enforced by the location of the development and the impact of construction on the local infrastructure, Aggregate Industries’ plants and delivery teams worked early starts, to ensure that they were able to deliver up to 420m3 of readymix concrete per day onsite by 7.30am.
Daniel Watts, Concrete Sales Manager from Aggregate Industries, said: “Arena Tower will provide much needed accommodation in the heart of Birmingham, and it is the latest in a series of projects, working in partnership with MPB, to provide ready-mixed concrete for the city’s construction boom. With a strong local network already in place, we were able to respond to this enormous demand by using resources close to Birmingham to ensure speedy and efficient deliveries to site to keep the concrete element of the project on schedule.”
Aggregate Industries’ standard ready-mixed concrete is EN 206 and BS 8500 compliant, providing reassurance to architects and contractors that it’s concrete is produced to the highest standards and does not contain ingredients that could affect the durability of the concrete or corrode reinforcements.
To help keep some of their construction programmes on track, MPB have taken advantage of Aggregate Industries’ Strike Now technical service. Using a digital remote sensing system, which can measure strength gain in-situ, clients using the Strike Now service are able to effectively monitor striking time to help meet their timescales for delivery.
The Arena Tower contract follows on from Aggregate Industries’ recent work with MPB Structures to supply more than 20,000m3 of ready-mixed concrete for Arena Central – the new HSBC UK banking headquarters also being built in the centre of Birmingham.
