Transport for London Cycle Kerb segregation system

The Background

The Mayor’s Flagship Cycle Superhighway 2 (CS2) between Aldgate and Bow roundabout is a major investment by Transport for London (TfL) to make the route safer for cyclists and other road users. The upgraded CS2 will link to the already segregated extension between Bow and Stratford and, when complete, will provide a cycle route into central London that, in the most part, will separate cyclists from other traffic. In addition, a number of improved pedestrian crossings and new pioneering cycle priority junctions, giving more time and space to cyclists, are being installed.

The Brief

TfL and contractors Ringway Jacobs enlisted Charcon to propose a safe and sustainable solution that could be delivered within the timescales of the project.

The Solution

Charcon’s technical team came up with an innovative Eco Countryside Cycle Kerb Segregation System as an alternative to the Granite Kerb and Concrete Block Paving inlay previously used. Modelled on Charcon’s Eco Countryside Kerb, Cycle Kerb would replicate the aesthetics of natural granite but, made from 82% recycled and secondary material content, would offer a 33% carbon footprint reduction in comparison to the old system.

Being installed on both sides of the carriageway, the unique integrated system is designed to save lives, safely segregating cyclists from passing traffic, even when on the blind side of a lorry or bus. Eco Countryside Cycle Kerb is also much quicker to lay and capable of withstanding vehicular impact.

The bespoke design met the brief, offering a safe, sustainable and efficient solution. In total, 16,000l/m of Eco Countryside Cycle Kerb will be supplied to TfL by the time the project is completed in the spring of 2016.
