The A1 through Yorkshire forms part of a strategic link in the national network between Scotland, the north-east and the south of England.

The 2005 A1 Darrington to Dishforth DBFO Project was comprised of the operation and maintenance of 33 miles (53km) of the A1(M)/A1(T) between Darrington, on the A1 just to the south of the existing A1/M62 Interchange, and the existing A1/A168 Interchange at Dishforth, east of Ripon.

The clients requirements were for an asphalt binder course material that could support very high volumes of traffic without undue deformation.

A key requirement of the job was that the laid material had to be constructed so that it was impermeable and provided protection to the lower bound materials.

Superbase 14 was laid as the asphalt binder course layer to a depth of 50 mm on top of a 28mm DBM50 base. Superhitex was used as the surface material. The overall pavement was designed as a flexible composite and used cement bound material in the lower base layers

Superbase satisfied the clients needs for a deformation resistant material that could be produced and laid with low risk of segregation and also deliver a relatively impermeable component within the upper pavement layer.
