SuperColour® Ultra in Greater Manchester CYCLOPS Junction
Aggregate Industries’ Express Asphalt team worked with Manchester Road Surfacing to make Greater Manchester a safer place to cycle with new colour coded demarcation areas.
The Brief
With Greater Manchester being one of the busiest urban areas in the UK, Trafford Council initiated a project aimed at improving road infrastructure for different users. Specifically, the council recognised the need for new cycle lanes in order to establish a four-way Cycle Optimised Protected Signals (CYCLOPS) junction at Upper Chorlton Road and Withington Road.
To enhance clarity and differentiation between lanes for cyclists, pedestrians, and vehicles, the council stipulated the use of coloured asphalt for the surfacing. In order to carry this out, Manchester Road Surfacing was subcontracted by John Sick & Sons, tasked with providing two types of coloured asphalt to successfully complete the project.
The Solution
Aggregate Industries was proud to successfully win the order for the brief, providing green and red asphalt – two of its six popular high quality colour choices – to sub-contractor Manchester Road Surfacing to lay.
SuperColour® Ultra asphalt is created with clear binder and high-quality coloured pigment to achieve a bold, long-lasting effect. This allows surfaces to be both highly functional and aesthetically pleasing, but also enhance safety through colour coded demarcation areas – which is what the brief called for. The team supplied 14 tonnes of red and 14 tonnes of green SuperColour® Ultra asphalt for three cycle lanes and a pedestrian lane on the CYCLOPS Junction.
The project came with the challenge of navigating through highly populated areas and working within restricted hours to minimise disruption to the public.
Becky Calen, Performance Products Business Manager at Aggregate Industries said “We’re pleased to have supported Manchester Road Surfacing in meeting the brief to provide safer cycle lanes in the Greater Manchester area. It’s important for all road users to distinguish between cycle lanes and pedestrian lanes to ensure safety and reduce accidents, which is far more difficult in densely populated areas. We take pride in our SuperColour® Ultra asphalt, which is a high-performance coloured surface course material that offers superior durability and is an excellent choice for projects like these. The colour differentiation will no doubt contribute to safer and better-managed roads.”
