The Ashton Northern Bypass is a multi stage scheme that has been in development since the 1990's and is designed to removed through traffic from Ashton-under-Lyne town centre.

The local authority involved was very aware of the problems that can be caused by both the handling of conventional concrete kerbs and by cutting the concrete on site. Ideally a product could be found that would ease these difficulties on the Ashton Northern Bypass.

Durakerb, was used following a successful installation and trial on Old Cross Street Car Park in Ashton-under-Lyne.

The new carriageway and adjoining car parks were constructed in stages, and therefore the purchase of the Durakerb product wasn’t for the speed of installation, (although this is also an advantage).  The environmental benefits, the 6kg weight (compared to 69kg for the concrete equivalent) and the cutting element (no RCS dust) were the primary factors in why the product was specified for these works.

We weren’t involved at the early stage of the project but came onboard after the successful initial trial. The local authorities involvement with an HSE working group initiative (‘Project for Reducing Respiratory Disease in Kerb, Paving and Block Cutting’) and the ‘HAPAS’ approval which Durakerb has were key factors in the decision to specify.
