Foster Yeomans supplied the materials due to its lower environmental impact and high quality material
The Channel Tunnel Rail Link (CTRL) has used over 10 million tonnes of Foster Yeoman (now part of Aggregate Industries), materials when construction began in 1988.
The CTRL Thames tunnel emerges on the north bank of the river Thames at Thurrock. The line then elevates and dips under the QE2 Bridge and snakes across the Purfleet sky line on its route to Rainham.
The supply of materials to this contract was awarded to Foster Yeoman Limited who, with the assistance of a freight facility grant from the DETR, purchased three 1,000 tonne European barges, tailored to deliver into the restricted berth at Gibbs Wharf. At the peak of the contract 4,000 tonnes per day was being barged into this busy wharf.
The successful completion of this contract is yet another demonstration of our ability to deliver large quantities of material while minimising the environmental impact by utilising the natural highway of the River Thames.
