Brief

Grassington lies in spectacular Wharfedale, one of the loveliest of the Yorkshire Dales. A village of great character, its stone houses and cobbled streets attract visitors from all over the world. Many new properties were built in Grassington between the 17th and the 19th centuries, mainly in the form of infilling between the buildings of the local farms. Furthermore, the existing larger properties were each split into two or three smaller dwelling units and thus the unique and quaint character of Grassington came into being.

The original fire station was opened 25 years ago in Grassington and now serves around 5,200 people, responding to between 60 and 70 calls per year. North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service has said the current station was no longer capable of meeting the needs of the modern fire service and is reaching the end of its economic life.

The new look station had to meet local planning requirements (Yorkshire Dales Planning Authority) and adhere with the local vernacular style.

Solution

Bradstone Old Quarried roofing slates were used to stay in-keeping with the Grassington local construction requirements and traditions. This premier range of resconstructed stone roofing slates retain the essential characteristics of the original natural stone slates from which they are moulded, and are a quality substitute for the continual decline of natural products.

Bradstone Old Quarried product features include:

  • Contains up to 50% recycled material making them the sustainable choice
  • Available in two colours to suit any application and environment
  • Supplied in a range of diminishing courses and random widths which give the roof the appearance of having used heavy stone
  • Allow for reduced erection and timber costs
  • Suitable for roofs down to a minimum pitch of 25°
