MOT Type 3 Aggregates

MOT Type 3 is a coarse, well graded aggregate material. due to its drainage ability, it is suitable for a wide range of applications from sports pitches to paving and pathways.

Our Type 3 aggregate, often referred to as MOT Type 3 sub-base, is a coarse well graded granular material typically used in road construction and as a base layer for other construction materials.

Produced from crushed rock which is screened and graded, giving a blended material with particles that range in size from 0mm to 40mm.  Type 3 is an open graded material, and has fewer fines compared to other sub-base solutions like MOT Type 1. This designed characteristic allows water to drain freely, making it an excellent choice for projects where efficient drainage is a priority.

The versatility of our Type 3 aggregate is evident in its wide range of applications.  It's commonly used as a sub-base material for sports pitches, ensuring that the ground remains stable and water drains away efficiently.  It's also perfect for permeable paving and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS). Other typical uses include equestrian arenas, driveways, paths, patios and tennis courts.

Excellent Drainage Properties

MOT Type 3 is designed with larger aggregate particles and less fine material, making it more permeable than other sub-base materials, such as MOT Type 1. This allows for better water infiltration and drainage, reducing the risk of surface water flooding or pooling. It's ideal for permeable paving solutions and SuDS applications.

SuDS Compliance

MOT Type 3 aggregates are often used in SuDS projects, which are designed to manage surface water runoff in a sustainable way. By allowing water to permeate through the sub-base and reduce surface runoff, Type 3 helps prevent flash flooding and contributes to groundwater replenishment.

Stability and Durability

MOT Type 3 provides a stable and durable sub-base layer, capable of withstanding weather fluctuations, frost, and frequent use. This durability makes it a long-term solution for both large-scale infrastructure projects and smaller domestic installations like driveways.

Why MOT Type 3?

MOT Type 3 aggregates, also known as "Type 3 sub-base," are high-quality granular materials used primarily for creating permeable and stable sub-bases in construction. They offer several benefits, particularly in the context of roadways, driveways, footpaths, and sustainable drainage systems (SuDS).

Type 3 can be easily compacted, ensuring that while water permeates at a high rate, the aggregate retains its strong load-bearing qualities.

Our Type 3 aggregate complies fully with Specification for Highway Works Clause 805 (SHW 805), so you can be confident when you're using our Type 3 aggregate, you are selecting a product that meets rigorous industry standards.

Sourced from across our network of quarries nationwide, our Type 3 aggregate is a reliable choice for projects that require a strong yet permeable sub-base.
