Effectively reduce laying time and road closure impact to the A639 road

Aggregate Industries completes Leeds road improvement project in record time.

The Background

Located immediately off the M1 Junction 44, the A639 from Leeds Road to Pontefract Road services the motorway slip road and a number of local distribution centres, including Royal Mail.

The Problem

The carriageway required extensive planing, adjustments and included the replacement of ironwork and kerbs. A key requirement of the project was that it needed to be completed quickly with minimum disruption to nearby businesses and the travelling public.

The Solution

Liaising closely with local businesses over a three month period prior to works commencing on site, the Aggregate Industries Contracting team put together a phased, 24 hours working programme that maintained access to all affected businesses throughout the duration of the works.

Using this fastidious 24 hour working approach, no time was lost between shift changeovers. During Phase 1 of the works, Aggregate Industries was able to lay a whopping 5,855 tonnes of asphalt and approx. 7,500m2 of geotextile in just one weekend. Saturday night alone recorded 3,872 tonnes of asphalt laid in 18 hours, this averaged at an impressive 215 tonnes every hour during this period.

Aggregate Industries completed their work well ahead of schedule and delivered the project in just 54 hours compared to the 58.5 hours that were originally scheduled.
