Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate how much asphalt I need?

Using our asphalt calculator tool makes it simple and easy to find out the required amount need for your project. You will want to:

  • Determine how thick you want the asphalt
  • Measure the length and width that you'd like to cover.
  • Multiply the length by the width to determine square footage.
  • Convert the thickness from inches to feet.
  • Multiply the thickness in feet by the square footage to determine cubic feet.
Is asphalt the same as Tarmac?

Tarmac is slightly different to asphalt as asphalt uses Bitumen. Asphalt can be used to surface the same areas that were once surfaced using tarmac. Like tarmac, asphalt is an aggregate of gravel, sand and a binding agent, for asphalt this is bitumen and in tarmac, tar is the binding agent.

What is better asphalt or concrete?

Aggregate Industries provides both high quality asphalt and concrete products so it really depends on your project needs and requirements. Asphalt offers a smoother finish whilst being slightly quieter to drive on and lower in cost per cubic square. Concrete however has incredibly strong properties and can offer more porous properties. Does asphalt come in different colours?

Asphalt does come in different colours, thanks to SuperColour Ultra. A range of distinctly coloured asphalts that uses a combination of clear binders and coloured pigment. The SuperColour Ultra range of coloured tarmac is the ideal choice to create amazing outdoor spaces.

Does asphalt absorb water?

Asphalt absorbs much less water than dirt.  We developed SuperDrain Asphalt to ensure our customers could support projects where flooding or heavy rainfall was an issue. As a permeable asphalt SuperDrain Asphalt works by allowing water to pass freely through the surface membrane.
