The Project

Aggregate Industries uses SuperColour Ultra, its eye-catching range of coloured asphalt, to help improve traffic flow and enhance safety at its Express Asphalt plant in Derby.

The Brief

Aggregate Industries’ Express Asphalt plant in Derby is part of the business’ nationwide network of asphalt plants and one of 20 mixing plants dedicated solely to asphalt collection. As a key regional city, the Derby site sees a high volume of vehicles loading and collecting products to distribute locally on a daily basis.
In 2021, Aggregate Industries conducted a customer survey which revealed that site enhancements were required to improve the quality of the road and on-site traffic management system to create a better user experience for staff, contractors and visitors.
Work needed to be carried out at the same time as keeping the plant operational, it was important that the upgrades could be completed as quickly and efficiently as possible to minimise disruption to on-site users.

The Solution

Aggregate Industries appointed surfacing contractor, Spadeoak, to carry out the upgrades at the Derby plant. A collaborative approach was taken to agree the scope of work and delivery, and planning and excavation work began at the end of November 2021 to prepare the site for the new asphalt.
160 tons of AC32mm Roadbase and 120 tons of AC20mm Defense Binder course were successfully installed, with Aggregate Industries using SuperColour to create clearly differentiated zones. 60 tonnes of red and 28 tonnes of green SuperColour were used to mark out the different areas of the Derby plant, providing a clear, visual route for directing traffic through the site.
The project was successfully completed in under three weeks with minimum disruption to customers and plant staff, with clear and effective road markings in place and working well.
Gary Brennand, General Manager at Express Asphalt, commented on the project: “After asking customers for feedback about their experience visiting our Derby site, we didn’t hesitate to respond and agreed clearer delineation was needed to increase efficiency and optimise safety. SuperColour really lends itself well to this type of application and we were able to simply and effectively use colour to create a much clearer route for drivers in and out of our plant. The finished job looks great – and most importantly, we’re already seeing improvements to the flow of traffic through site.”
“Throughout the project, the team at Spadeoak went above and beyond to ensure we were able to complete the works with minimal disruptions to the smooth running of the plant. Everything was completed to an extremely high standard and we’re delighted with the final result.”
