Hitting a high note concrete supplied to Birmingham Conservatoire

Aiding in the recent suite of high-profile developments in the UK’s second city, having provided almost of all the internal concrete provision required in the development of the Birmingham Conservatoire

The Background

Officially opened this November (2017), the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire, which has replaced the former Adrian Boult Hall in Paradise Circus, is a £57 million teaching and performance facility. Housing a 500-seat concert hall and other performance spaces including a recital hall, organ studio and a dedicated jazz club, the building has been labelled as a world class venue for students and the community alike.

The Problem

Aggregate Industries was awarded the contract to supply ready-mixed concrete to the project by Thames Formwork under main contractor, Galliford Try, with the two companies also working together at the redevelopment of the city’s Snow Hill station.

The Solution

In total, the Aggregate Industries’ team supplied a colossal 4,000 m 3 of RC40 standard concrete, some 85 per cent of the total concrete supplied for the internal structure over the course of the project. The supply was used to construct the groundworks and concrete frameworks on the build.

Crucially, Aggregate Industries occupied two concrete plants within just three miles of the project, enabling an easy and timely turnaround for deliveries.

Gavin Adkins, Aggregate Industries General Manager for the Midlands & North, said: “We were delighted to be involved in such a high-profile and significant project for the Birmingham and surrounding area. As with our recent work together at the Snow Hill redevelopment, we once again worked very closely with the Thames Formwork team each step of the way to ensure a consistent, reliable supply and that all deadlines were met ahead of time. We look forward to working with the team once again in more projects to come.”

“Having previously worked with Aggregate Industries, we knew that they would be able to deliver the quality product supply and extensive expertise required in a project of this calibre and scale. Once again, the business didn’t disappoint and worked very much as an extension of our team throughout the project.”
